Why all helmets are not the same !

Did you know that not all helmets are the same ?.... now that may sound like a stupid question, but it is an important one!!

Did you know that there are both "Hard" and "Soft" Foam helmets ?

With the fundamental difference being that a Certified CPSC Hard foam helmet will provide up to 5x more protection than a Soft foam helmet.

Hard Foam vs Soft Foam Helmets

What is a Hard Foam Helmet

A CPSC hard foam helmet consists of a hard plastic outer shell and hard EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) foam inner lining. During an impact the EPS foam is able to break apart and disperse energy allow the helmet to protect your head during high impact concision.

What are Soft Foam Helmets

If you are a skater of the older generation this is what you would have grown up wearing. Soft foam helmets consist of a  hard plastic outer shell and a soft foam/rubber lining. According to experts  a soft foam helmet will provide more protection than no helmet however they will not reduce the energy pulse of a impact enough to pass CPSC standards

What are CPSC Standards ?

In order to pass CPSC standards a helmet must be able to reduce an impact pulse of 1000 G's to under 300 G's. This is the equivalent of a 2.02m vertical fall or a collisional mpact at 22km/h. A Soft foam helmet only reduces a 1000 G force to between 400-900 G's which does not pass CPSC standards. A hard foam helmet however will reduce a 1000G force to between 168-258 G's making them a much safer form of saftey gear.
